Starting A Private Practice Checklist

Get an Office (Optional)

Get an Address

You will need a physical address for many different directories, google my business, etc.  Even those of us who work remotely need a physical address.  

If you don’t want to use your home address, there are places that can provide you with a virtual office.  You can also sublet an office from someone one day a month in order to have a physical address.

An address is crucial for you to be found on Google Maps and Google. 

Get a Phone Number (Set Up Voicemail)

A phone number is also necessary for the same reasons as an address.  You can get a virtual phone number.  I use Phone.com.

Get an Email Address

Get a Professional Headshot

I can’t overstate the importance of this step.  People chose you mostly because your picture gives them good vibes.  

Get an NPI

Get an EIN

You don’t need this unless you are clasifying your business as an LLC or SCorp.  I used my social security number until I was making enough money to turn my business into an SCorp.  LLC have no benefit in my opinion.

Set Your Fee

When you first start out, your rates have to be a bit lower.  After you have a steady stream of clients, then you can raise your fee.  Check out other people providing the same service in your area.  As I write this today, I think rates for beginning therapists in the Portland area is between 80.00 to 125.00/session.  

Create Website

Hiring someone to create your website is expensive.  Creating a website is getting more and more easier.  

Set Up Google My Business

This is another super important step in marketing your private practice.  There are many videos on youtube showing you how to do it.
